On the way back from Harrisburg Wednesday, State Sen. Art Haywood called his mother to let her know that a resolution he sponsored honoring Civil Rights pioneer Fannie Lou Hamer had been approved.

“She was so happy,” said Haywood (D-Phila./Mont.). “I couldn’t be more pleased.”

The Mississippi born activist who was beaten coming back from a voter registration workshop in the early 1960s, will be celebrated in early October on what would have been her 100th birthday. Her birthday is Oct. 6, 1917.
