Senator Art Haywood made the following statement after a Special Committee meeting on Attorney General Kane’s capacity to perform her role without a law license today:

“The question before our Committee is whether or not an Attorney General can fulfill the duties of that office with a suspended law license. During today’s hearing we heard from district attorneys from Somerset, Berks and Bucks counties. When questioned, the district attorneys indicated that the key duties of their own roles – such as charging criminals – could be delegated to staff if they were temporarily incapacitated. At the same time, the district attorneys stated that, if they were Attorney General and had their law license suspended, they would not continue to serve. The district attorneys did not provide a conclusion on whether or not the Attorney General can serve in her role without a law license. Further hearings are needed so that we can continue this assessment”
