The Other is Us

Senator Haywood holds a “Call for Peace”, Press Conference condemning recent bomb threats Last week, I held an emergency press conference in Center City with Congressman Bob Brady, Congressman Dwight Evans, Senator Vincent Hughes, State Representative Isabella Fitzgerald, and Rev. Gregory Holston calling for the end of violence against those who have different political beliefs. Please watch.

I’ve also attended services for the Emmanuel nine in Charleston, a service for the Tree of Life Synagogue victims of Pittsburgh in Elkins Park, and a service for Destiny Charles in Germantown. I have grieved for the Parkland, Florida children, for our children shot and killed on the streets of Philadelphia and beyond, for the two African Americans killed shopping at Krogers in Kentucky, and for women killed with a gun in domestic violence incidents each day. African Americans, Jews, whites, children, and adults are among the many victims at churches, movie theatres, concerts, shopping centers, and walking down the street.  Yes, gun violence occurs to others, but the other is us. Now is the time to make the protection of human life a top priority, and not gun rights. Support laws that get guns out of the hands of dangerous people.
