Our Solutions: Requested Line Items in Budget Address

Earlier this month, Governor Tom Wolf gave his budget address for the 2020-2021 Fiscal Year. My office requested support from Governor Wolf for several priorities to make Pennsylvania work for everyday people, see the below graphic.

In addition, the budget includes $5 million for environmental conservation, expands the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program by $1 billion – which provides grants for local projects -- and increases funding for K-12 by $150 million and higher education by $276 million. Thank you, Governor Wolf.

Love is Love Day

My colleague Senator Steve Santarsiero (D-Bucks) attempted to get Senate support of a unanimous consent resolution recognizing 15 February as Love is Love Day for the LGBTQ community. At least one Senator refused. Below is a quote from his Senate floor remarks:

Love is Love Day“Every member of this Senate, and indeed every member of the General Assembly has someone in their life who is a part of the LGBTQ community. It is not okay that today in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, it is perfectly legal for members of the LGBTQ community to be discriminated against. Every one of us should be embarrassed by that fact.”

This is another example of how the Senate continues its years-long pattern of rejecting LGBTQ legislation, as it has with a bill by Senator Larry Farnese (D-Philadelphia) banning LGBTQ discrimination and a resolution by Senator Sharif Street (D-Philadelphia) recognizing June as Pride Month. Love is love, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. I stand with Senator Santarsiero in support of Love is Love Day.

No Excuse Mail-In Ballots Are Here

In October 2019, the Pennsylvania legislature passed an election reform package including several changes to make it easier for Pennsylvanians to cast their votes. One big change is the introduction of no-excuse mail-in ballots. Separate from traditional absentee voting, you can now skip the lines on election day and vote from home in advance – no excuse necessary. This is a great option for busy parents, those with limited access to transportation, hospital workers, students, and anyone who may have difficulty getting to the polls during election day.

Applications for mail-in ballots are now live at VotesPA.com/MailBallot. You can also stop by my office in person or give us a call. We have printed applications available for your convenience.
