Harrisburg, February 4, 2019 – Sen. Art Haywood (D-Montgomery/Philadelphia) announced today that funding has been approved to improve access for the historic Mermaid Lane and Winston Road.

“I am pleased to announce this funding that will restore and improve sections of these historic streets in our community,” Haywood said. “Mermaid Lane and Winston Road are special to our area due to their historical importance and design.”

Haywood said ensuring that all community residents can experience these historic streets provides a unique connection to the past.

The City of Philadelphia’s Streets Department was granted $1.1 million through PennDOT’s Multimodal Transportation Fund to restore historic streets, including Mermaid Lane and Winston Road. The funding will be used to improve multimodal access, as well as make the streetscapes ADA compliant.

In addition to improving transportation along the historic streets, the restorations will also help increase economic development in the historical areas.

“We are fortunate to be surrounded by so many historical landmarks and destinations,” Haywood said. “I look forward to seeing the restoration of these streets and positive impacts the restoration brings to our area.”
