Back to School Celebration

August is here already, and a new school year is around the corner. My office prevented the summer slide with 267 children who participated in our Summer Reading Revolution. Now neighborhood children can go back to school with tools they need to thrive.

Join me and the Regular Fellows Foundation on Saturday, 18 August from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. for our 3rd annual Back to School Celebration. We will take over the 1100 block of East Chelten Avenue at Lonnie Young Recreation Center for a day filled with food, fun, and educational giveaways. Last year was a great success thanks to our sponsors. This year we want to see more families walk away equipped for the school year.

$30 Million For Technical Education in 2018-2019 Budget

$4.7 million manufacturing jobs were lost between 2000-2010 in the U.S. from technological change and automation. Pennsylvania is responding to the changing economy by developing new investments in job training and workforce development.

PASmart The 2018-2019 budget signed by Governor Wolf on 22 June contains $30 million in new funding for technical education in Pennsylvania. The initiative, PAsmart, is part of a broader effort to close the skills gap and adapt our workforce for the 21st century economy. Nearly 70,000 secondary students stand to benefit from the new CTE appropriations in the form of increased access to in-demand jobs, strengthened business-education alliances, and improved STEM education.

With this increased investment, Governor Wolf intends to prepare workers throughout the Commonwealth to fill 700,000 annual open STEM jobs and help nearly 400,000 Pennsylvanians achieve a post-secondary education. If you live in the 4th district and believe your agency or organization might be eligible for PAsmart funding, please contact my office.

Bike Tour

One way I enjoy the summer is by staying active through bike riding. Please join me for a tour of the beautiful 4th district. I will be hosting a series of five bike tours in Philadelphia and Montgomery Counties between August and September. Grab a bike, helmet, and a cold bottle of water and hit the trails with me on one or more of these Saturdays:
