Harrisburg – November 10, 2016 – State Sen. Art Haywood (D-Philadelphia/Montgomery) released the following statement in support of a new protocol to be followed in Philadelphia when there is a police-involved shootings.

The new procedures announced earlier today by the Philadelphia District Attorney’s office includes the development of a separate unit to investigate police-involved shootings and new transparency provisions to improve communication with family members.

Haywood has a keen interest in this issue.  He is the prime sponsor of Senate Bill 400, which would appoint the Office of Attorney General to prosecute cases of police-involved deaths.

Haywood’s statement follows:

“The new protocol helps address transparency issues as they relate to police-involved investigations.  Transparency builds trust and trust is essential in these situations. Greater openness and access to information prevents misconceptions and promotes a balanced examination of the facts.”
